The field of Information Technology is continuously growing and developing, but it is also a creative field where small companies and even individual entrepreneurs can develop successful products and services. In our region, there are plenty of exciting career opportunities for IT experts. Our education gives you the readiness to work in different software engineering or IT-related tasks and positions. Your future occupational title could be, for example, software developer or software engineer.
The degree programme in Information Technology provides you with extensive knowledge in software engineering and communications. The studies start from the basics, so previous knowledge or experience in the IT sector is not required. During your first two years of study, you will build a strong foundation in engineering sciences and information technology, covering essential skills such as the foundations of computing, fundamentals of programming, software development, cybersecurity, and other supportive competences. In the later stages of your studies, you will deepen your professional expertise and focus more strongly on your chosen specialisation. During your studies, you will also deepen your expertise in either Sustainable Software Engineering (SSE) or Smart Devices and Solutions (SDS).

The degree programme in information technology gives you a wide understanding of the opportunities that technology offers, but also of its limitations. You are able to develop IT solutions that are user-friendly, sustainable and economical and less energy-dependent.
After completing the degree
Centria’s scholarship system comprises of various elements, each of them providing an opportunity to either reduce the amount of the tuition fee, or to earn financial support.
1. Scholarship element – Early bird: -10%
- An early bird scholarship when accepting Centria's Conditional Offer for studies within 2 weeks from notification
- This way, only a discounted 90% of the tuition fee amount is paid for the first academic year, both on Bachelor’s and Master’s level
- The 10% amount is automatically reduced from the tuition fee
2. Scholarship element – Progress in studies: -20%
- When studying 60 ECTS per year completing studies normatively according to the study programme, a student can apply for this scholarship
- The scholarship is 20 % of the tuition fee of their particular study year
- It is paid afterwards
3. Scholarship element – Academic performance: -100%
- Scholarship covering the full tuition fee of one academic year, both on Bachelor’s and Master’s level
- Awarded based on the academic progress to the top two performing students per degree programme, taking the normative progress (60 ECTS/year) and the grade point average into account
- Transferred credits are not taken into account
- This scholarship can be received once per degree/person
- It is paid afterwards
4. Scholarship element – Finnish language skills: 2000 €
- This scholarship element is a reward for advancing in Finnish language studies
- Can be proven with a Finnish language certificate completed outside of Centria, with a minimum level of B1.1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
- This scholarship can be received once per degree/person
5. Support programme – Employment: 1400 € / month
- Centria offers paid, 3 month internships to 7 international and 7 domestic students working as tandem pairs in education, RDI activities or student services
- Positions are open twice per year, and annually to 14 students
6. Support programme – Integration: 2000 €
- This scholarship is awarded to 5 students who have outstanding achievements in advancing internationalization, integration of international students, encouraging community spirit and cross-cultural cooperation
- Both international and domestic students can be awarded
- This scholarship can be received once per degree/person
- Awarded students are selected by a Selection Committee

The contact classes are arranged on our Talonpojankatu campus in Kokkola on weekdays between 8 am – 6 pm. During your first study year, all the classes require presence on campus. However, the percentage of contact teaching diminishes during the following study years: in the 2nd year, 75 % is contact teaching on campus, in the 3rd year, 50 % is contact teaching on campus, and during your 4th study year and especially in the spring semester, you will concentrate on finishing your thesis project. Through this arrangement, we try to offer our students a smooth transition into working life.
Studying at Centria UAS is very practical, and you will get many chances to participate in real-life projects together with working life representatives. We have a very active co-operation with companies, and the studies include visits to companies and guest lecturers from companies. In addition, practical training and student projects are part of the studies. During the work placement, you can practice and increase your know-how in an actual work environment. This provides a great opportunity to show your expertise to a potential employer and to get a summer job, for example. You can also practise your skills in our software factory and IT laboratory.

The engineer’s work is very practically oriented, and all professional studies include a lot of learning by doing. In our region, many successful companies need experts who understand the possibilities of digitalisation. These companies also help us develop the degree programme and its content. Company representatives visit as guest lecturers and offer work placements, thesis topics and other projects for students. These projects are an excellent way to demonstrate your expertise and may lead to a summer job or future employment. We also cooperate with international partners such as Cisco, Microsoft, Amazon and ESRI.
The engineering studies in information technology consist of core studies, profiling studies, which include specialization studies, optional studies, work placement and a thesis. The scope is 240 ECTS, and the length of the studies is around 4 years.

The purpose of the thesis is to prove that you have a good command of software engineering-related theory and processes, and you can apply these in practice. The students usually do their thesis directly for a specific company, either independently or with a fellow student. The thesis project, together with the work placement, introduces the student to practical work-life duties already during their studies. It is also the first step towards the first permanent position for many of our students.
Some typical planning and development projects are, e.g. planning and conducting a quality assurance manual, marketing plan, business plan, orientation plan, directive, process or production line. The thesis project is a chance to show the skills that you have acquired during your studies. To become an expert, the student needs opportunities to solve authentic problems of the profession.
Conducting the thesis requires systematic, planned and justifiable work to reach the set aims. The thesis work is a process that compiles orientation, planning and implementation of the topic, reporting and assessment. All these make an integrated entity. The thesis is like a business card for the student and can be utilized in publication archives and workplaces when the student proceeds into a professional career.
