Opintojen aikana perehdytään ympäristötaiteen, julkisen taiteen, yhteisölähtöisen taiteen ja palvelumuotoilun lähtökohtiin ja näkökulmiin. Opiskelijoita kannustetaan löytämään taiteen ja muotoilun rajapintoja yhdistäviä menetelmiä ja työkaluja. Kaksivuotisessa maisteriohjelmassa opiskelijat toteuttavat projektiperustaisia opintoja, joilla on vahva työelämäorientaatio. Projekteihin integroidaan taideperustaista tutkimusta ja/tai toimintatutkimusta. Keskeisenä tavoitteena on työskennellä todellisissa toimintaympäristöissä ja yhteistyössä yliopiston ulkopuolisten sidosryhmien kanssa. Arktinen luonto ja kulttuuri muodostavat opintojen kehyksen ja kontekstin.
Sustainable Art and Design -maisteriohjelma on kehitetty vastaamaan luovan alan ammattilaisen muuttuvaan rooliin yhteiskunnassa. Koulutuksen sisällöt on suunniteltu hyödyntämään palvelumuotoilun ja soveltavan kuvataiteen mahdollisuuksia yhteiskunnallisissa, yhteisöllisissä ja liiketoiminnan toimintaympäristöissä. Tutkinnon aikana opiskelijat kehittävät osaamistaan seuraavilla alueilla:
Palvelumuotoilua ja soveltavaa kuvataidetta hyödynnetään työskentelyssä asiakkaiden ja yhteisöjen kanssa ongelmien tunnistamiseksi ja ratkaisujen kehittämiseksi. Kyse on luovasta yhteistyöstä.
