Admissions criteria - Communication Systems and Networks, Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering, Master of Science (Technology) (2 yrs)


Eligibility criteria

Eligibility criteria in the master's programmes consist of two parts: Tampere University's general eligibility criteria, and programme-specific eligibility criteria, which specify and/or add to the general criteria. Applicants who do not meet both the general eligibility and the programme-specific eligibility criteria will not be selected as students in Tampere University. 

All the required attachments are mandatory in the separate admission process for the master's programmes offered in English. Missing attachments may lead to a rejection in student selection.

General eligibility   

To be eligible to apply to a master’s programme at Tampere University, you must have  

1. Bachelor’s degree - nationally recognized first cycle degree 

  • an applicable bachelor’s degree at a university or a university of applied sciences in Finland 
  • a bachelor's degree completed in a university outside Finland which provides eligibility for equivalent university master’s degree studies in the country in which it was awarded: with a minimum scope of 180 ECTS credits, three to four years of full-time study; from a relevant field for the master’s degree programme that you’re applying to; from a recognised institution of higher education. 

2. A good command of the English language for academic purposes. 

Applicants in their final year of the bachelor’s degree due to graduate in the spring of 2025, are eligible to apply if the degree will be completed by the start of studies 18 August 2025, providing they fulfil all other requirements. Language requirements

When applying to a master’s programme at Tampere University, you must submit proof of English language proficiency for academic purposes. You have two options of demonstrating this: language tests or previous studies. Please see detailed instructions on the language requirements webpage.

Previous studies

An exemption from submitting a language test score is possible only based on the studies specified and listed by Tampere University. Studies not mentioned in the criteria are not accepted.

Intake

The intake is 20 students. There is no obligation to fill the intake.

Programme-specific eligibility criteria

The previous degree should be a Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science (Technology), Bachelor of Science, or other applicable bachelor’s degree, such as the Bachelor of Engineering degree completed in a Finnish university of applied sciences. In the specialisation of Communication Systems and Networks in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering the previous degree has to be in one of the following (or highly related) fields:

  • Computing, information technology, computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering or other applicable field with proficiency in mathematics and physics as well as elementary programming skills

For applicants who have completed their degree in a University of Applied Sciences (AMK) or a University in Finland the required minimum GPA is the same as in the admission to the master’s degree programmes offered in Finnish.

Minimum GPA for bachelor's degrees completed in a Finnish university (yliopisto): 2,8/5

Applicants in the final year of their bachelor’s degree must meet any applicable minimum GPA requirement for their programme already at this stage. The conditional offer will be confirmed, if the qualifications are completed and a copy of the degree certificate is submitted to the Admissions Services of Tampere University by the start of studies 18 August 2025, provided that the applicant satisfies the possible minimum GPA requirements. The conditional offer will be withdrawn if an applicant’s final GPA falls below the minimum requirement.

Academic evaluation and selection process

Admission is based on admission scores. The faculties calculate these scores by conducting an academic evaluation of the documents provided by applicants. Admission scores are determined for all applicants who meet the minimum requirements for admission to Tampere University.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be divided into admission groups (degrees conferred by Finnish universities of applied sciences / degrees conferred by Finnish universities / foreign degrees) and ranked based on their overall admission scores.

Calculating admission scores

Admission points (maximum 100 points) are given as follows in these categories:

  • Prior qualifications (including the content and relevance of the qualifications, and academic performance in core studies): maximum 60 points
  • Language skills maximum 10 points
    Meeting the language test requirement OR exemption from taking a language test: 5 points.
    Excellent results from the language test (IELTS 7.5, TOEFL 103, PTE Academic 72, C1 Advanced & C2 Proficiency 191): 10 points.
  • Other supporting factors: maximum 30 points
    The CV and motivation letter account for the majority of points that may be awarded, unless otherwise specified in the programme-specific requirements.

Students admitted to a master’s degree programme may be required to supplement their previous degree with additional studies. Possible supplementary studies will be decided by the faculty case by case (maximum 60 ECTS).


More information about the application process

This programme starting in August 2025 is part of Tampere University Master's Programme Application Period 2025. By using the same form, applicants are allowed to apply to a maximum of 2 different master’s programmes.

Applications are submitted in the national electronic application system Studyinfo.fi. The online application form will be available only during the application period only at Studyinfo.fi. The application period starts on 11 December 2024 at 8.00 (UTC+2) and ends on 3 January 2025 at 15.00 (UTC+2)

All the required attachments are mandatory in the separate admission process for the master's programmes offered in English and applications will not be processed if all required documents are not submitted by the deadline for submitting attachments.

Listing study options in order of preference in your application

When applying, applicants must prioritise their programme choices (1st-2nd). If accepted, an applicant is offered a study place in only one programme (the highest prioritised programme that they qualify for). Please note that the order of preference is binding, and it cannot be changed after the application period ends.

The admission results will be published in April. All applicants will be informed about the admissions results.
