Admissions criteria - KAMK Additional application, Bachelor of Engineering, Information Technology, Software Development in the Age of AI (part-time), capital region, studies starting autumn 2025


Eligibility criteria

Eligible applicants for degree studies at universities of applied sciences have completed at least one of the following:

  • the studies required for graduating from the Finnish upper secondary school or a Matriculation Examination;
  • an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree; IB certificate completed (at least six subject groups)
  • a European Baccalaureate (EB) Diploma;
  • a Reifeprüfung (RP) or Deutsche Internationale Abitur (DIA) degree;
  • a Finnish vocational upper secondary qualification covering 120 credits or 180 competence points or a corresponding earlier Finnish vocational degree covering at least 80 credits;
  • a Finnish post-secondary or higher vocational level diploma;
  • a Finnish vocational upper secondary qualification or a further or specialist vocational qualification as a competence-based qualification, or a corresponding previous qualification;
  • a foreign qualification that provides eligibility for higher education studies in that country;
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree.

Depending on the higher education institution, you can also be eligible if you hold an Advanced International Certificate of Education degree (AICE) in Finland, have the right to study towards a university degree in Finland, or hold a degree granted by a Finnish higher education institution or at least a Bachelor level degree granted by a foreign institution.

Applicants’ eligibility is verified after admissions, but the UAS may decide to check it also earlier. The study place is conditional until the university of applied sciences has checked the information used in applying.

Refugees and asylum seekers

If you are a refugee or have status comparable to a refugee or are an asylum seeker and cannot thus verify your previous degree with required attachments, university of applied sciences may still invite you to the entrance examination. Please contact the Admission Services.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences' use the following student selection method:


The entrance exam:

  • Video task
  • Online written exam

Video task will be checked among a maximum of 60 best applicants that pass the online written exam.

The applicant must pass all phases of the entrance exam in order to be selected for the admission.

Proof of English proficiency

All applicants of the University of Applied Sciences’ Bachelor’s programmes, including native speakers of English, must demonstrate their English language proficiency. 

English language skills can be proved by the following documents:

  1. English language test results:
    • IELTS Academic*: a minimum total score of 6.0 (Test sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking)
    • TOEFL Academic (iBT)*: a minimum total score of 60 (Test sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing)
    • PTE Academic*: a minimum total score of 55 (Test sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening)
    • Cambridge English Scale Score: a minimum total score of 169 (Test sections: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening, and Speaking)
    • TELC (The European Language Certificate) English B2-C1 university qualification, completed on or after 1 October 2021: minimum of B2 level (Test sections: Listening/Reading/Language Elements, Writing and Speaking)
    • Oxford ELLT (English Language Level Test), completed on or after 1 July 2023: a minimum total score of 6.0 (Test sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking)
  2. National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) English: Grade 4 or higher on all the subtests (speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading comprehension)
  3. Higher education degree completed in English in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or the United States, or a doctoral thesis completed in English in any country. Please note that your degree must be taught and assessed entirely in English**.
  4. Upper secondary degree completed in English in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or the United States. Please note that your degree must be taught and assessed entirely in English**.
  5. One of the following grades in the Finnish Matriculation Examination, European Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, or Reifeprüfung/DIA completed in Finland:
    • Finnish Matriculation Examination: English advanced syllabus with a minimum grade C
    • The whole International Baccalaureate diploma or International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) completed in English
    • DP Course Results or IB certificate completed in English (at least six subject groups)
    • International Baccalaureate final examination: English A HL/SL or English B HL/SL with a minimum grade 4
    • European Baccalaureate: at least grade 6.00 in L2-level English
    • Reifeprüfung/DIA diploma completed in Finland: at least grade 7 in advanced English
  6. Applicants graduating in spring 2025:
    • If an applicant graduates in spring 2025 and it is not possible to obtain a required proof of English language skills (mentioned in point five or Finnish vocational basic qualification conducted in English) during the application period, they can still be invited to the International UAS exam and be considered in the certificate-based selection. The final required proof of English language skills must be submitted by 10 July at 15.00 Finnish time. The possible student selection is conditional until the certificates are verified. If the language requirement is not met, the selection will be revoked. The exception applies to those completing the following degrees and graduating in spring 2025:
      • Finnish matriculation examination
      • International Baccalaureate
      • European Baccalaureate
      • Reifeprüfung/DIA completed in Finland
      • Finnish vocational basic qualification conducted in English

* IELTS Academic UKVI, IELTS Online, PTE Academic Online, PTE Academic UKVI and TOEFL iBT Home Edition are also accepted.

**The language of instruction must be clearly stated on official documents. You can also document this by submitting a certificate/letter from your university / educational institution in addition to your official study documentation.

Only the tests listed above will be accepted. No exceptions will be made.

There are no expiration dates, but the language test results must be verifiable from the online verification service of the organiser. 

The TOEFL test cannot be verified after two years. The IELTS test cannot be verified after three years. If the test scores can no longer be verified, the test is not valid. The applicant should make sure that the test results are not too old. If the applicant is unsure and the test results are more than 2 years old, it is advised to retake the test.

The language certificate must be submitted by 15 April 2025, 3.00 pm Finnish time (UTC +3).


Entrance examination

Description of entrance examinations in admissions criteria

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences' use the following student selection method:

The entrance exam is arranged online and in two phases.

Phase 1: Video task

Video task will be checked among a maximum of 60 best applicants that pass the online written exam. 

Phase 2: Online written exam

1. Mathematics

2. Reading Comprehension

Exam points:

Video task min 17 points/ max 25 points

Online written exam min 17 points/ max 25 points

Total min 34 points/ max 50 points.

The applicant must pass all phases of the exam in order to be selected for the admission.

The entrance examination assesses the applicants’ abilities to study in universities of applied sciences.

Results will be published no later than 28 May 2025. 

Please notice that the result of the online entrance examination is not valid if you will be considered as non-eligible during the application process.

  • Bachelor´s Degree in Business Information Technology, Game Development (full-time)

Phase 1: Video task

Applicants should make a motivation video about themselves as part of the application process. The maximum length of the video is 3 minutes. 

Discuss the following topics in your video:  

  • Briefly introduce yourself. 
  • Share your key reasons for selecting KAMK as your study destination by highlighting one or two aspects of the university or chosen degree program that inspire and motivate you.  
  • Explain your motivation for choosing this specific program and what you hope to gain from your studies at KAMK.  
  • Describe your career goals and how completing the degree at KAMK will support and contribute to achieving them. 
  • Discuss your teamwork skills, including how you collaborate with others and handle differences in opinions within a team.  
  • Discuss how you plan to prepare for studying abroad and in a different learning environment?  

Video task must be attached to the application by 15 April 2025 at 3 pm (UTC/GMT +3).

Videos submitted after the deadline will not be considered. 

 

Phase 2: Online written Exam

Arranged on 23 April 2025 at 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM (UTC/GMT +3).

Invitations to the online written exam will be sent by email by 17 April 2025.

Phase 1: Video task

  • Discuss how you plan to prepare for studying abroad and in a different learning environment?

The following documents are accepted as proof of identity:

  • passport
  • Finnish identity card with a photo, issued by police
  • Finnish driver’s licence
  • another EU/ETA country identity card with a photo

Application attachments

1) Applicants with a non-Finnish qualification

1) A copy of the final secondary school certificate or equivalent 
Only final certificates awarded by national and regional bodies granting educational certificates will be accepted. Therefore, various other documents such as “Result slips”, “Testimonials”, “Statements of Results”, “Examination Results” are not considered as official certificates.
2) A copy of an official Finnish, Swedish or English translation of the certificate must be provided, if the certificate is not written in one of these languages. The translation must have the translator’s signature and stamp.

The applicants graduating in summer following the application period, are requested to submit the copy of the transcript of records (and official translation) to the online application form by 15 April 2025 by 3:00 p.m. (UTC+3). The copies of the final certificates will be submitted upon confirmation of acceptance.

2) Applicants with a Finnish qualification

You must submit copies of your certificates 

- if you have taken the Finnish matriculation examination prior to 1990,
- if you are completing an IB-examination in a Finnish upper secondary school in the spring 2025,
- if you are completing a Reifeprüfung-examination in the spring 2025 or 
- if you are completing an EB-examination in the spring 2025,
You must submit a copy of your temporary certificate to the Admission Services of the UAS of your first choice by the 15 April 2025 by 3:00 p.m.

3) Identification document
The following documents are accepted as proof of identity:

  • passport
  • Finnish identity card with a photo, issued by police
  • Finnish driver’s licence
  • another EU/ETA country identity card with a photo

5) Copy of document exempting from tuition fees

The tuition fees will concern non-EU/EEA degree students. The tuition fee does not apply to persons who are citizens of EU countries, in the EEA, or persons who are treated as EU citizens by agreement by the EU, or the family members of such persons.

Please note that documents received after the given deadline will not be accepted. The first-choice UAS will decide on the applicant's eligibility to all UAS options in the application based on the documents sent.

Admitted students’ eligibility for application will be verified. As an exception to this, to be acknowledged in certificate-based selection, the student must hold a degree applicable to the selection method in question.

Please make sure that all attachments are of good quality, easy to read, full-color scans or photographs of the complete required documentation. Enclosures that do not meet these requirements may be rejected.
